The Thierseetal is a region giving peace and strength.
Hiking straight from the hotel – no car needed
The Juffing is the perfect place for anyone looking for a hiking hotel without the need for a car. Here, nature begins right on our doorstep: leisurely strolls, scenic panoramic trails and beautiful hikes to cosy alpine huts can all be enjoyed at a relaxed pace, starting directly from the hotel. Many of our guests appreciate being able to leave their car behind for the duration of their stay. No traffic, no hunting for a parking space – just nature, tranquillity and true relaxation.
Whether you’re looking for a leisurely stroll or a longer mountain hike, there are plenty of trails around Hinterthiersee that wind through unspoilt, natural countryside.
The local mountain of Thiersee, the Pendling, invites you to hike and climb! You can set off on this hike directly from the hotel. Alternatively, you can reach the closer starting point by car in five minutes by turning right on the road to Thiersee at the former Gasthof Pfarrwirt and driving up the steep road to the paid parking area at the Gasthof Schneeberg (956 m). The hike to the Kufsteiner Haus on the Pendling (1,563 m, reopened on April 3!) first leads across meadows and through dense forest, passing the Oskar Spring. Via switchbacks, you quickly reach the scenic mountain ridge through mixed woodland, from where you continue to the Kufsteiner Haus. From the terrace, you can enjoy a magnificent view stretching from Thiersee over Lake Hecht and Kufstein to the Kaiser Mountains, and southward to the Großvenediger and Großglockner. If you feel like it, you can return via the Kala Alm, from where a pleasant forest road leads back to Schneeberg.
The Heimkehrerkreuz is located above the Kala Alm and can be reached from there in about 25 minutes. You follow a small path through the forest towards the Pendling. At a clearing, turn left and walk directly to the cross. There, you are rewarded with a beautiful view over the მშვიდ Thiersee Valley and further out to the Chiemgau Alps. And best of all: it’s a particularly peaceful spot – complete with a bench – perfect for relaxing and enjoying some quiet time alone. If you don’t want to return the exact same way, take a left at the Kala Alm and follow the path a short distance uphill towards the Pendling, then turn right towards the Jochalm and Höhlensteinhaus. Continue across a lovely orchid meadow and back into the forest. Over roots and rocks, steadily descending, you follow the narrow trail until you reach a gravel road again. Instead of heading towards the Jochalm, you return at a relaxed pace to the Gasthaus Schneeberg and back to the hotel.
There are places that are truly special, especially during the winter weeks, when hardly anyone ventures there apart from capercaillies, deer, and chamois—rarely a person. This is because there is no lift, no cleared road, and no open hut to stop for refreshments. One such place is our Höhlenstein with its small summit, the Feuerköpfl, which is well worth climbing, as from there you can enjoy far-reaching views from the Wilder Kaiser across the Tauern to the Zillertal Alps. You take the forest road branching off opposite the Hotel "Sonnhof" and head uphill to the Breitenau meadow. Where the forest begins, the cleared road also ends; from here, there is usually a well-trodden path continuing uphill along the forest road until, after crossing a rise, you come upon the beautiful alpine basin with the Höhlensteinhaus (1,233 m), which is open from May. Passing by it, you climb to the summit of the Feuerköpfl (1,292 m) with its magnificent view of the snow-covered mountains. On the way back, it is well worth enjoying the peace and quiet on the terrace of the Höhlensteinhaus before heading back!
One of the most varied hikes in the Thiersee Valley is the one to the Köglalm and Köglhörndl! The Köglalm lies on a sunny plateau north of the Köglhörndl. The best way to reach it is via the asphalt road directly from the hotel, turning left before the sawmill towards the Gasthaus Wieshof. You then continue in the shade of the forest past the Modal farms and along the forest road, including a short but steep climb, up to the beautifully exposed Köglalm (1,432 m). After a short rest, the route continues across the alpine pasture, past the cross, and further uphill to the Hörndl, offering magnificent views! Heading east, you descend quickly along the ridge to the Höhlensteinhaus (1,259 m), located in an alpine basin and already closed, but with its cozy sun terrace still accessible. From there, you return at a relaxed pace along the forest road to Breitenau and then back to Hinterthiersee.
One of the most interesting hiking destinations in the Thiersee Valley, especially for the sporty: From Hinterthiersee, the asphalt road branches off at the sawmill towards the Wieshof in the direction of the Modal farms. From there, the trail leads you through the shade of the forest to the Köglalm and finally up through the summit section to the Köglhörndl with its cross at 1,645 m (2½ hours). The path then descends and ascends again into the forest—with magnificent views as far as the Großvenediger—and continues up to the Hundsalmjoch (1,637 m) with the modern Hundsalm cross. At this point, you leave the ridge; the route leads directly opposite the Hundsalm cross along a marked path down into alpine terrain. Across meadows, a shortcut branches off to the left, leading to the forest road, which you follow for the final descent to the Almgasthof Buchacker (open Tue–Sun). Shortly before that, a path branches off to the right to the Hundsalm Ice Cave (2½ hours) at 1,520 m. Here, you can turn off to visit this natural monument, where temperatures remain around zero degrees Celsius, with guided tours by members of the caving association (open every Saturday and Sunday, duration approx. 30 minutes, admission: €9.00; don’t forget a warm hat and gloves!). You return via Hundsalm, Köglalm, and back through Modal.
This hike is (only!) suitable for sure-footed and vertigo-free mountain hikers and offers a truly special, almost archaic experience in the midst of a remote wild mountain gorge! You can start directly from the hotel, following the hiking trail towards Landl. Alternatively, you can drive about 5 minutes in the direction of Landl (when the road levels out, make a sharp left turn!). The approach to the gorge begins as a pleasant forest walk along the Glemmbach. Inside the gorge, you will need to overcome smaller obstacles (sure-footedness is absolutely essential!) and cross the stream around a dozen times (there is only one bridge!). Therefore, it is recommended to bring a pair of dry socks and old trainers or sandals. In any case, waterproof footwear with good grip on wet stones is essential! After 2 to 2.5 hours of hiking, a short ascent at the end of the valley leads to the Gasthaus Wastler (currently open Thursday to Sunday), inviting you to a cozy stop. The return route then follows a relaxed path of about 1½ hours via Embachwies above the gorge back to the starting point. In the upper part of the gorge, it’s worth taking a break on one of the gravel banks and enjoying a packed snack—so bring a “Jause” (picnic)! One more tip: the warmer and more humid it is, the more mosquitoes there are, so don’t forget insect repellent!
There are not many Tyrolean communities that can boast such a large number of chapels as the Thiersee Valley. It would not be possible to visit all of them in a single day, as the distances are quite considerable. We therefore recommend the Thiersee Chapel Trail, where you can pause, reflect, and find some quiet moments. The first destination is Breitenau above Hinterthiersee. Here you can admire the first chapel, built in 1865, whose Baroque altar features a Pietà. A short way back, a narrow but steep forest path leads up to the old Jägerkapelle, which was built in 1935. It is the smallest accessible chapel in the valley. Just a few meters higher stands the new Jägerkapelle on the summit of the Schattberg, built in 1986 by the Thiersee rural youth. Descending via Modal, you return to Hinterthiersee in just under 2 hours.
Those looking for a more relaxing hike of around 5 hours, where the soul can truly unwind, can continue from Modal along the long walking path through the Ebenwald down to the Glemmbach (670 m). Shortly afterwards, the Gasthof Wastler (open Fri–Sun) invites you to stop for a break. The route then continues to the chapel of Rohrmoos in Jochberg, dating back to 1555. The trail leads further down to Landl, where, not far from the lakeside bathing area, the final chapel awaits. The return route takes you through the Glemmbach Gorge and then back uphill along “hidden paths” towards Hinterthiersee!

You’ll discover the labyrinth on an idyllic forest walk around the Schattberg, which is also wonderful to walk in winter. To get there, follow the forest track branching off to the right until you reach Breitenau Farm. At the end of the meadow is a ground labyrinth, built from 16 tonnes of stones and modelled on the labyrinth in the Church of San Vitale in Ravenna.
In the west of the Thierseetal valley lies the wild and romantic Glemmbachklamm gorge – a natural paradise. A paradise for anyone looking for adventure on their hiking holiday in Tyrol. Through the forest and along narrow paths, accompanied by the sound of rushing water, the route takes you on an exciting journey through the ice-cold water. This trail can be reached from Hinterthiersee via the main road to Landl by turning sharply left onto Glemmtalstraße and parking at the bridge at the end. Now follow the path – which is still quite wide at this point – towards the gorge. Sure-footedness is essential, as this is a red-marked trail. You might want to bring a spare pair of shoes, as you’ll need to wade through the Glemmbach to continue.
This unassuming raised bog, which has developed over thousands of years, is situated in the district of Jochberg at an altitude of 830 metres and can be reached via Landl and Riedenberg. It is situated north of the “Rohrmoosbauer” chapel in a depression more than 100 metres in diameter – surrounded by a belt of spruce trees and criss-crossed by typical drainage channels. Take just a few steps into the area and feel the cool, damp peat soil beneath your feet. Around the natural raised bog and the energetic stone circle, various stations invite visitors to meditate and linger.
Visit Austria’s highest cheese dairy at the Ackernalm during your hiking holiday in Tyrol. From Landl, a toll road takes you up the long left-hand bend just past the edge of the village to the demonstration cheese dairy, which offers fascinating insights from mid-May to early October (while the 320 dairy cows are out to pasture). The Ackernalm lies between Veitsberg and Sonnwendjoch, where magnificent mountain peaks await the adventurous. The view towards the Kaisergebirge and Hinterthiersee is unforgettable. And for those who don’t wish to climb so high on foot, there is a lovely walking trail towards Hinterbärenbad, where foxes, hares and chamois say ‘goodnight’ to one another (please note the toll charge of € 4).
This easy hike starts at Bayrischzell railway station and heads north. The path is well signposted, and after about 15 minutes and a climb of 50 metres, you reach the Bayrischzell waterfall. You then come to a bridge offering an unobstructed view. After a climb of about 20 minutes and a further 50 metres in altitude heading north, you reach the Grüne Gumpe. This is a natural pool in front of a waterfall. There is a lovely picnic area, an adventure playground and a water playground where you can cool off on hot summer’s days. From the Grüne Gumpe, the footpath leads back to Bayrischzell.
The route takes you all the way round Lake Hechtsee along beautiful lakeside paths and pleasant sandy tracks, offering magnificent mountain views. You can start either at the Hechtsee car park (on the main road towards Kiefersfelden; turn left just before the border) or at the hiking car park on Thierseestraße, past Marblinger Höhe. From the hiking car park on Thierseestraße, the trail first takes you across a small footbridge over the Kieferbach stream, which also forms the border between Germany and Austria.
The circular walk follows the shore of Lake Schliersee at all times, never straying far from the water’s edge. Even in winter, let yourself be captivated by the beauty of the snow-covered landscape and the frozen lake. From the station, head towards the lake to Vitalwelt Schliersee, then continue through the spa gardens and along the lake towards Freudenberg. Pass the SkatePark, cross the bridge and climb Freudenberg, which features a 40-metre stretch with a 6% gradient. The route descends the Freudenberg over a 50-metre stretch with a gradient of 20–26%. Continue along the tarmac path, crossing the railway line and passing the campsite. The route continues until you cross the railway line again (maximum gradient 8%), and via the Rixner Alm to Fischhausen. Continue along the lake and alongside the main road on the footpath to the village of Schliersee. Walk past the lido in the village and through the shops to the ice-cream parlour, then turn left and walk the last few metres along the lake.
The hike we’re looking for around the Nockberg near Riedenberg in the Thierseetal is a scenic, sun-facing circular route. A well-known route for serious mountaineers is the Veitsberg Circuit from Riedenberg, which encompasses the Nockberg area. The start is the hiking car park in Riedenberg. The route leads uphill from Riedenberg on the sunny side, past the Nockberg, often with views of the Veitsberg. The trail offers sections through beautiful woodland and open terrain. After the walk, the Gasthof Wastler in Riedenberg is a great place to stop for a bite to eat.
The walk from Hinterthiersee to Kranhof is a lovely, easy route (around 2½–3 hours for the round trip) that offers fantastic views of the Glemmbach Gorge. It starts in the village centre heading towards Landl, passes the Schiestlhof, goes via Modal, and is particularly popular as a leisurely walk in winter. Route: Schiestlhof (Grub) -> Kranhof -> Modal -> Wieshof -> Hinterthiersee. The walk can be undertaken as part of the ‘Modalrunde’ or the ‘Kufstein-Hinterthiersee-Kranhof-Wiesenhof’ tour. Highlights include the views of the Glemmbach Gorge.
The path from the former Gschwendt inn towards Hausern (Thiersee/Breitenau area) is a scenic route – often described as a winter hike or walk – that winds through the meadows and woodland below the Schneeberg. The route offers beautiful views and connects Gschwendt with the lower-lying hamlets towards Thiersee. From Gschwendt (above Hinterthiersee), the trail leads down towards Hausern. It is a fairly leisurely walk, much of which takes place at a sunny altitude. The trail leads to Thiersee, where you can also catch the free Postbus back to the hotel.
A leisurely valley walk from Bayrischzell to Geitau follows the Leitzach river through the picturesque valley, often passing by flowering meadows. The route is ideal as an easy hike (approx. 2.5 hours) or a scenic walk. The path is mostly flat, easy to walk on and can easily be extended, for example along the Alpbach. From Bayrischzell across the Leitzach, past the airfield to Geitau. A leisurely stroll takes you back via the Wendelstein-Männlein-Weg.
The starting point is the Hödnerhof in Ebbs Eichelwang. Follow the right bank of the Inn past Ebbs, Niederndorf and Erl, then cross the bridge to the Oberaudorf side and continue to Nußdorf. It’s a lovely cycle ride to Rosenheim (here, switch to the right bank of the Inn and continue to Neubeuern). Before Raubling, switch back to the left bank of the Inn and follow the route past several lakes towards the centre of Rosenheim. At the Inn Museum, turn back across Happingersee, following the signs. At Happingersee, switch back onto the Inn Valley Cycle Route as far as Raubling, then switch back to the right bank of the Inn, passing the swimming lake at Neubeuern. At Nußdorf, cycle back along the right bank of the Inn as far as Erl, Niederdorf and the end point at Ebbs – Hödnerhof.
